Better a Dry Crust

Day 18  from The Wise and the Foolish

Proverbs 17:

1     Better a dry curst with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.

14   Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.

19a  He who loves a quarrel loves sin;

    Throughout the Proverbs, strife is spoken of as something to avoid. It is better to do with less if that means having peace than to go for the 'goods' that is accompanied by strife. In other words, peace is more valuable than feasting or luxury of any kind.

    It is so easy to get caught up in a quarrel before one realizes what is happening. But as soon as one does realize that contention is present, it is best to drop the matter before it becomes full blown, and by all means, we should be very careful not to start a quarrel. It's like a dam that starts to leak. There is a little water seeping through at first, but it could lead to flood stage. There is always a mess to clean up after a flood. We don't need that in our relationships. God has given us the tactics to stop the leak, by dropping the matter. We don't have to have the last word.

    Some people just have a spirit of arguing on them. If we get people all riled up in quarreling, it is sin. If we don't stop a quarrel by dropping the matter, that is sin too. To whomever knows what is right to do and doesn't do it, to him it is sin.

Wise:  strives for peace, drops a matter rather than quarreling about it

Foolish:  gets involved in quarreling, does not try to stop it, loves to quarrel
